How to Form a New Group

If you are interested in forming a local group, we can help.

  • 1ST: You will need to decide if you want to affiliate with either the Council for Secular Humanism or with the American Humanist Association. Doing this will allow you to take advantage of additional services and the use of a non-profit tax exemption. In addition, they can help you by giving you the names of their members in your area.

  • 2ND: Contact Us with the contact information for your group so that we can include you in our list. We can also provide you with a list of speakers and a list of our members in your area to contact as well.

  • 3RD: Determine a location to have your meeting. It will help if you use the same location, at the same time every month. This will make it easier for your members to know when you are meeting. For instance - you may decide to meet at the local library on the first Saturday of every month.

  • 4TH: After setting up a meeting place and time, contact the people on the lists you have received to invite them to attend - you may also want to ask them to volunteer and help with things like publicity and snacks.

  • 5TH: Contact your local media. Many have free calendar listings for groups to advertise their meetings. This may help attract individuals not yet affiliated with Humanism. If you have a guest speaker - be sure to include that information in your advertising. You may also want to create a press release to get an article written about your new group. Contact your local media to find out what the guidelines are. The secret to success with the media is to follow up with them politely.

  • 6TH: Create flyers - and leave them at your meeting place, if appropriate. You can also leave these at coffee houses and any other places you might find appropriate.

  • 7TH: Have your meeting, and enjoy yourself.

Also - if you are looking for ideas for your group - check out Secular Seasons. They have information on things you can do to celebrate the seasons - Humanist style.    The Campus Freethought Alliance has a good list of resources for people starting groups at: http://www.campusfreethought.org/leaders.htm
