Current Issues

The Humanists of Florida Association (HFA) has focused its attention a few key issues that are fully aligned with Humanist philosophy and that also affect our quality of life in Florida:

Democracy -- Humanists are dedicated to Democracy as an ethical form of government that allows for individual freedom while promoting personal responsibility.  Our goal is to create a more compassionate society through the use of reason and science.

Science Education --Scientific Literacy is an essential skill to have in this modern age.  Science and technology are integral to every aspect of modern life: from what we eat and where we live to how we work.  Knowledge of science determines how effectively we as a society adapt to technological changes, how we will deal with problems such as disease, the environment and even war.  Good citizenship now requires a basic level of scientific literacy.  The price we will pay as a society for not promoting and encouraging scientific literacy could ultimately be our survival as a species.

Education -- Humanists are profoundly committed to the belief that all people can, and do, learn and are dedicated to sustaining and strengthening public education in pursuit of a more enlightened and compassionate society.  HFA wants to popularize science and its peaceful applications and to encourage individual growth aimed toward achieving a more progressive, enlightened and sane society.

Community -- HFA works to create an environment where people may actively and openly practice their humanist life stance, by providing support and services to Humanist communities that embodies the key Humanist principles of “Reason and Compassion in Action.”
