Projects and Activities for
Local Groups
An easy
thing to do is to conduct a training on how to write a letter to the
editor that actually gets printed and as part of the training. You
can have people write letters mentioning they are humanists and then
send them to the local paper. HFA has a wealth of issues to choose
from and topics resurface all the time. Check out our online
training
You can also
do a training on how to meet with elected officials then schedule
office visits with your state representatives to talk to them about
ERA, ending the gay adoption ban, etc. Check out online training
You can do
the same thing with the county or city government. However, the
local issues tend to be different then at the state. A good project
would be to get your local government (county or city) to adopt the
International Convention on the Rights of the Child. Once this is
adopted in any jurisdiction, it will allow the public defenders to
legally refer to it in court. Once precedent is set, then it
snowballs - with publicity in the American Bar Association of
course. If your group decides to take this on, please contact us so
that we can assist you with materials, strategy, etc.
An easy
thing to do is to set up a table at the local Earth Day Celebration
and create petitions to give to your local congress person in
support of a Clean Energy Future. See Tabling Tips for assistance,
and Request tabling materials from HFA
Memorial Day
- have a picnic for atheists in Foxholes. There have to be some
around and it would be a great way to get publicity.
If you have
a few volunteers who are motivated, spending 3 hours/month working
on publicity is a great way to spend their time and again, HFA can
help get them training and provide regular issues to work on and
story ideas to pitch. Contact us if you would like to work on this
as well
Please contact
us as we can assist you with your projects by providing materials,
training, fundraising, and strategic assistance to help your project
succeed. |
